India questions Apple about its security measures and protecting users from hackers

Indian authorities allied with Prime Minister Narendra Modi have questioned Apple over the accuracy of its insider threat algorithms and are now investigating the security of its devices, according to The Washington Post.

Officials appear to have targeted the company after it warned journalists and opposition politicians that state-sponsored hackers may have infiltrated their devices in October. While Apple has been under scrutiny for its security measures in the public eye, the newspaper says government officials have been more forthcoming about what they want behind the doors. closed.

They have reportedly summoned company representatives in India to pressure Apple to find a way to mitigate the political impact of its hacking warnings, and officials have also summoned an Apple security expert to conjure up alternative explanations for the warnings they could tell people that likely don’t point to the government as the likely culprit.

The journalists and politicians who posted Apple’s warnings on social media had one thing in common: They were all critical of the Modi government. Amnesty International examined the phone of a certain journalist named Anand Mangnali, who was investigating Gautam Adani, a long-time Modi ally, and found that An attacker had planted Pegasus spyware on his Apple device.

While Apple has not explicitly said that the Indian government is responsible for the attacks, Pegasus software, developed by Israeli company NSO Group, is mostly sold to governments and government agencies.

The newspaper report said that the ruling political party in India has never confirmed or denied the use of the Pegasus program to spy on journalists and political opponents, but this is not the first time that its critics have been infected with the Pegasus spy program.

In 2021, an investigation by several publications, which highlighted Project Pegasus, found spyware on the phones of people with a history of opposing and criticizing the Modi government.
