How could AI features “revive” the PC market in 2024?

The PC market has had quite a few tough quarters in a row, as there has been an “unprecedented trend” in the PC market for two consecutive years toward double-digit declines year-over-year, according to a report from IDC.

However, the research firm is optimistic about the market recovery, as IDC said in a report: “Despite the short-term challenges, IDC continues to expect the market to rebound in 2024 and beyond as many factors converge over the next two years.”

IDC believes the integration of AI capabilities into PCs is expected to act as a catalyst for upgrades, hitting shelves in 2024 and initially targeting specific segments of the enterprise PC market.

“Over time, further advances in use cases and cost reductions could trickle down to the broader market,” IDC noted.

Second, the vast and aging base of commercial PCs that pass the four-year mark by 2024 is expected to require a refresh, coinciding with the pressing demand to move to the Windows 11 operating system.

The total PC market for 2024 is expected to grow by 3.4% compared to 2023, according to IDC.

“Although we still expect volume to decline for eight consecutive quarters year over year from Q1 2022 through Q4 2023, it is still tapering,” said Jay Chou, research director at IDC Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers. “Compared to nineteen consecutive quarters of last year.”

Personal computers declined from the second quarter of 2012 to the fourth quarter of 2016.

Chu also explained that laptops have already reached higher levels than in 2019, indicating a significant expansion in the laptop market even after the decline in purchases caused by the Corona virus.

He also emphasized that factors such as hybrid working, commercial modernization and growth in premium PCs could lead to a CAGR of 3.1% from 2023 to 2027.”
